Circuit of the Americas to Host X Games

The Circuit of the Americas, the Formula One race venue built by San Antonio billionaire Red McCombs southeast of Austin, was selected today to host the summer X Games for the coming four years, 1200 WOAI's Michael Board reports from the track.

"We are incredibly excited to partner with the Circuit of the Americas to bring the X-Games to Austin in May," Scott Guglielmino, senior vice president of ESPN programming and the X Games told a news conference at the track this morning.  "The fantastic Circuit of the Americas facility provides a unique opportunity to grow the X Games in a new region of the country and in a city that has a proven track record of embracing big events."

The X Games, which were created by ESPN, is a summer 'Olympics-type' event featuring sports such as skateboarding and BMX bicycling.  In the last several years, the X Games have become a major destination event.  ESPN says one million people have been to at least one X Games event this year.

ESPN says the finalists for the X Games included Detroit, Chicago, and Charlotte.

McCombs said this is a 'great day for the State of Texas.

"We are proud that Circuit of the Americas could help lure an event of this magnitude to the capital city of Austin," McCombs said.  "We created Circuit of the Americas to be a year round destination for the best sports and entertainment properties in the world, and this shows the natural evolution of our business."

Some of the X Games events will also take place in downtown Austin.

Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell said the X Games fit into his city's image.

"The X Games celebrate fitness, courage, and individuality, traits greatly valued by our community," he said.  "We look forward to showing the world all of the wonderful things Austin has to offer."
