Cornyn Sees Compromise as Texas Democrats Blast Cruz

Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn says the 21 hour anti Obamacare filibuster could lead to compromise, but Cornyn says any attempts to shut down the federal government to try to stamp out the Affordable Care Act would be counter productive, 1200 WOAI news reports.

"I believed the House may in fact perhaps send over a debt ceiling increase which includes a delay in Obamacare," Cornyn told 1200 WOAI news.

The proposal comes a day after the federal government unveiled insurance prices for young healthy people under those 'exchanges' which will be more than double what they are paying now for coverage.

"Rather than have this thing turn into a train wreck, we should hit the pause button at least for a year," Cornyn said, pointing out that many of the staunchest allies of the Democratic Party, like the AFL CIO and other labor unions, are also calling for major changes in Obamacare.

Meanwhile, Texas Democrats are scrambling to blast Cruz, with State Senator Leticia Van de Putte (D-San Antonio) going so far as to call Cruz a 'Wendy wannabe,' in a reference to State Sen. Wendy Davis' unsuccessful filibuster against an abortion bill this past summer.

"You can play games all you want with rhetoric and you can have as many filibusters as you want," Van de Putte said.  "I have an extreme concern with someone who would play so lightly with the basic safety of our military."

Van de Putte, who is the chair of the State Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, says by threatening to shut down the government, Republicans are placing the lives of military members deployed in Afghanistan and elsewhere in danger.

Congressman Marc Veasey (D-Texas) told 1200 WOAI news Tea Party Republicans like Cruz are 'trying to sabotage health care for millions of Americans.'

"Entirely avoidable if Republican leadership would stop playing political games by holding hostage the basic functioning of the government in their fantasy efforts to deny people health care."

Both Van de Putte and Veasey are calling on likely Republican gubernatorial nominee Greg Abbott to oppose Cruz' efforts.
