Poll: "Alternatives to Evolution" Should be Taught in Public School

Poll:

Belief in the Theory of Evolution is gaining steam, but a new poll of Americans by the British polling firm YouGov reveals that more Americans still believe that 'God created human beings in their present form,' 1200 WOAI news reprots.

21% of Americans believe that humans evolved and God 'did not guide the process,' while another 25% believe that humans evolved along the lines of Darwin's theories, but that evolution was 'guided by God.'

But far more people support the teaching of 'creationism,' or 'intelligent design' in schools than oppose it, 40% favoring teaching so called 'alternatives to evolution' and only 32% opposing their teaching.

Conservative Texas Board of Education member Ken Mercer says this is what the conservatives on the board are fighting for.

"Kids should be able to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of any theory," he said.  "Kids should also have the right to raise their hands in class and ask questions."

People who oppose the teaching of 'creationism,' or 'intelligent design,' which teach that God was involved in the evolution of humans, are frequently accused of 'weakness' by conservatives who support the teaching of alternatives to evolution, saying they don't believe evolution can stand up to serious scrutiny.

The U.S. Supreme Court in 1987 ruled that the teaching of creationism violates the Constitution because it is 'specifically intended to advance a particular religion.'

Mercer says he is pleased that supporters of teaching creationism lead those who oppose the teaching by such a large amount.

"The biggest problem we have in Texas, we found across the state, is that kids are not even allowed to ask questions," Mercer said.  "Education 101 is being allowed to ask questions."

But the percentage of Americans who believe that God played 'no part in evolution' is up from 10% in 2004 to 21% today.
