O'Connor Student Run Over by Gravel Truck

A 15 year old O'Connor High School student is in critical condition at University Hospital today after he was run over by an 18 wheeled gravel truck as he walked across Leslie Road near the school today, police tell 1200 WOAI news.

"This young man was walking to school and a vehicle stopped and asked him if he wanted a ride, it is my understanding that it was an acquaintance of his," Police Sergeant Javier Salazar said.  "the male started walking across the street, and from what it appears he may have crossed into the path of an 18 wheeler that was coming by."

Salazar said the truck driver 'tried to take evasive action' but the boy was run over and dragged about 35 feet.

Salazar says the wreck is still under investigation and there is no decision on whether any charges should be filed.

Neighbors n ear Leslie and Braun Roads say the gravel trucks use t Leslie as a short cut to get to a nearby quarry.

"Aside from the fact that they are not supposed to be on the street at all, there is a sign posted, they are not going the speed limit," said Natalie Cook.

She says the rumble of the big trucks wakes her up early in the morning.

"They start as early as 2:00 in the morning, trying to come down here, Monday through Saturday," she said.
