A San Antonio Police Officer shot and killed a man in the parking lot of a popular northeast side restaurant early this morning, 1200 WOAI's Michael Main reports.
Police Chief William McManus says it happened at Chacho's Restaurant at Loop 410 and Perrin-Beitel, where the six year veteran of the police force was working off duty, but in uniform, providing security.
"There was an altercation between two drivers at the drive up window, when one vehicle bumps into another vehicle," McManus said.
The officer approached and began investigating the minor accident, when the officer noticed trouble.
"He sees a passenger in the vehicle fidgeting around, reaching for something in his waistband, and the officer is walking around the front of the car to talk to the passenger," McManus said.
He said at that point, the passenger got out of the car and pulled a gun on the officer.
"The officer fired multiple times," McManus said. The suspect runs, the officer doesn't think he hit him, but as he is running the suspect collapsed in the parking lot." A handgun was found near the man's body.
The 23 year old man was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer will be placed on desk duty, which is standard procedure, while the incident is investigated by the SAPD shooting team.
